UP FRONT.

What happened, what it felt like, and what comes next.

An institution meant for a hundred million begins far smaller than that — a few people, building in the open, telling the truth about how it goes. This page is that truth, told as it happens: the people who stand up before it is safe to, the arguments we lose and say so, the small wins that turn into momentum. Read it as it is written — by one human to another, over Saturday coffee. And write back. The moment you do, this stops being an audience and starts being a community.

The Build

The monthly diary of building this thing - told the way it actually went. Erratic at the beginning, because building is; honest always. We have learnt to love changing our minds - it is how the good ideas survive.

Essays

The longer thoughts - where this is going, what it asks of us, what keeps the founder up at night and what gets him up in the morning. From him first; in time, from voices across the Circles. Written when there is something to say, never to fill a calendar.

Letters

Your half of the conversation. Write back, and the best of it runs here word for word, with your written blessing - never edited, never mined for quotes. No comment box anywhere on this site; a letter is the older, better social medium.

Why We Build

A concentration camp is a warning - not that evil people exist, but that good people, and good peoples, can effect evil. What the hill at Mauthausen teaches about where wonder lives, and why we build.

Meta-Crisis? Meta-Solution.

Climate Week opens today in New York around one idea: the action we drive together. It is fitting, then, that UnitedPeoples chose this day to launch its new website. The site details the structure that makes it possible — it is not another initiative in a single domain, but the coordination layer beneath them all, built from a year of feedback and now wholly in public.

Essay

“…to prevail, they evolve.”

Six years ago I wrote the letter that ended Leaders Expedition. I read it again last week, and found that I had written the design brief for UnitedPeoples without knowing it - and that the last line I wrote that day turned out to be the design principle.
