Founding stageThe public-benefit foundation is established; the institution described is designed, not yet built. Founding capital builds it.
Terms · Backing

What you are giving, and what it does.

These terms cover the First Backers' programme at unitedpeoples.earth. They set out what backing is, what it is not, what you receive, and how to stop.

01Who You Are Backing

The foundation.

Stichting UnitedPeoples receives your backing and is responsible to you under these terms.

02What Backing Is

A donation to a foundation. Nothing is being sold to you.

Backing UnitedPeoples is a gift to a public-benefit foundation. You are not buying a product, a service, a share, or a seat. Nothing on this site is offered for sale, and nothing you receive as a backer has a commercial value or can be exchanged for one.

Your backing pays for our major donor fundraising pitch — the case for building UnitedPeoples, put to the people who can finance it. The five things it pays for are named on the Back UP page, and that list is the whole of it.

Three things backing is not:

Not founding capital

That is a separate conversation, and it lives at The Plan.

Not a membership fee

Membership in UnitedPeoples will be free, and what starts free stays free. Backing confers no membership, and membership will require no backing.

Not influence

Every tier receives the same things. A higher amount carries more of the pitch and confers nothing further — no priority, no access to decisions, no say in what UP does. Influence is not available at any amount, and backing should not be made in the expectation of it.

03The Tenets Bind the Foundation, Not the Backer

The commitments that govern how your backing is used.

UnitedPeoples is governed by its Tenets — the Moonshot, the Charter, the First Principles, and the Membership Pledge. They are binding institutional commitments, published in full, and they are the standard against which every Project, Circle decision and institutional choice is tested. Where operational expediency and the Charter pull against each other, the Charter holds.

Two consequences matter to a backer, and we state them as terms:

We will not use your backing in any way that contradicts the Charter. The Charter's twelve commitments — equality; no ground for discrimination, prejudice or violence; equal voting rights; free expression; personal security; privacy; food, water and air; education; healthcare; livelihood; provision for those who cannot provide for themselves; and the protection of the natural world — are the ethical baseline of everything the foundation does with money given to it.

We are not aligned to any party, ideology or movement. The First Principles commit UP to common impact, not ideology. Your backing will not be spent on partisan political activity, and your name on the Roll is not an endorsement of any party or candidate — nor will UP ever represent it as one.

The Tenets do not bind you. Backing is not the Membership Pledge and does not ask you to affirm anything. The Pledge belongs to membership, which backing does not create. You are asked for no oath, no affiliation, and no agreement with our views.

04What You Pay, and When

Monthly, in euro, by card, until you cancel.

Backing is recurring and monthly by design. You choose the amount: €5, €10, €25, €50, €100, or a figure of your own. All amounts are in euro (EUR). If your card is in another currency, your bank converts the charge at its own rate and may add a foreign-transaction fee — neither is set by us or by Stripe.

Payment is taken by Stripe. We never see or hold your card details. Your first payment is taken when you back; each subsequent payment is taken on the same day of each following month, until you cancel. Stripe emails you a receipt for every payment.

If you would rather give once instead of monthly, you can. A single gift of €60 or more counts as a year's backing paid at once. A single gift below €60 is received with thanks and creates no record in our systems — no Roll entry, no register entry; it exists only at Stripe.

05Cancellation

At any time. No notice period, no fee, no permission needed.

You can cancel whenever you choose. There is no notice period, no minimum term, no cancellation fee, and no need to give a reason.

To cancel, use the Manage or cancel your backing link on the Back UP page or in any email we send you. Stripe emails you a secure link to your own billing page, where you cancel yourself.

Cancellation takes effect at the end of the month you have already paid for. You are not charged again after that, and your backing runs to the end of that month. You will be asked for a reason at cancellation; answering is optional and declining changes nothing.

If a payment fails — an expired card, most often — Stripe will retry. If it cannot be collected, the backing lapses. A lapse is treated as a cancellation, with the consequence for the Roll set out in section 07.

06Refunds

A 30-day window; errors corrected at any time.

If you change your mind, write to firstbackers@unitedpeoples.earth within 30 days of a payment and we will refund that payment in full, no reason required.

After 30 days, a payment is a completed gift to a foundation and is not refunded as a matter of course. But if a payment was taken in error, taken after you cancelled, or taken from a card that was not yours to use, tell us and we will correct it whatever the date.

07The Roll, and the Year Rule

A number is earned by carrying the backing for a year.

Every backer takes a number on the Backers' Roll, in the order they arrive. Each number is issued once and never reissued.

The number is earned by carrying the backing for a year. This is the term with the sharpest consequence, so it is stated plainly:

Cancel or lapse inside the first year

Your entry is retired. Your name and country are erased, the number is kept but shown to nobody, and it is never issued again to anyone.

Carry it for a year

Your place is permanent, whatever you do afterwards. Cancel in month thirteen and the number stays yours.

A single gift of €60 or more

Takes a permanent place from the day it arrives — the year is already paid.

A number does not record how much you gave, and no amount is ever published.

Your name is published only with your consent. You choose at the welcome screen whether the Roll shows your first and last name with your country, or the word Anonymous with your country. Nothing else is ever shown — no amounts, no titles, no email address. That consent is yours to withdraw at any time: write to firstbackers@unitedpeoples.earth and the entry becomes Anonymous, keeping its number. Withdrawal does not undo publication that has already happened.

08What a Backer Receives

Four things, identical at every tier — one of them conditional.

UP FRONT

The newsletter, from the day you back. It comes with the backing; there is nothing to sign up for, and you can leave the list at any time without affecting your backing.

Your place on the Backers' Roll

On the terms in section 07.

The Briefing

Once a year, online: the founder on the state of the pitch, with your questions taken directly.

The First Backers' pin

On the condition below.

The pin is struck only if and when UnitedPeoples is funded and opens. If that does not happen, the pin is not made, and nothing is owed in its place. Backing pays for the fundraising effort, and that effort may not succeed.

None of these has a commercial value, none can be sold or transferred, and none is a return on an investment.

09Your Data

The Privacy statement is the commitment; this is where it applies to backing.

Everything we do with your personal data is governed by our Privacy statement, under the EU General Data Protection Regulation. Stichting UnitedPeoples is the controller. For a backer, in short:

Payment

Payment is taken by Stripe; we never see or hold your card details. From the checkout we receive your email address, the billing name you gave, and your billing country — and nothing more.

The Roll

Your name appears on the Roll only with your consent, as set out in section 07, and that consent is yours to withdraw at any time.

The register

Your email address and billing name are held in a register only UP can see, used to administer your backing and to send you UP FRONT. Unsubscribing from UP FRONT is honoured permanently and does not affect your backing.

Your rights

Your GDPR rights — access, rectification, erasure, restriction, objection, portability, and withdrawal of consent — are honoured on request via info@unitedpeoples.earth, whatever the Roll's own rules say. You may also complain to the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens, the Dutch supervisory authority.

Where these terms and the Privacy statement touch the same subject, the Privacy statement governs personal data.

10Tax

ANBI status is real; your deduction depends on where you live.

Stichting UnitedPeoples holds Dutch ANBI (public-benefit organisation) status. Depending on your jurisdiction and circumstances, your gift may be tax-deductible. Whether it is, and on what terms, is a question for your own tax authority or adviser — nothing here is tax advice. Stripe's receipt is your record of payment; if you need something more formal, write to us and we will help where we can.

11What We Ask of You

Two things.

Back with a payment method you are entitled to use, and give us an email address that reaches you. If a backing is made fraudulently, or with a card reported as used without authority, we will refund it and retire the entry.

We may decline or return a backing where accepting it would put the foundation in conflict with its Charter, its ANBI obligations, or the law. We do not expect to use this provision, and we will tell you directly if we ever do.

12Contact

Questions, problems, complaints.

Write to info@unitedpeoples.earth — or firstbackers@unitedpeoples.earth for anything about a backing or a Roll entry. We aim to reply within a few days, and a person will reply.

13Changes to These Terms

Forward-looking only, and you will hear about them.

We will update these terms as the institution evolves — in particular at public launch. The "last updated" date above always reflects the current version. Changes apply to payments taken after the change, never retroactively, and we will never change the Roll's rules to the disadvantage of a number already earned. If these terms change materially, we will email backers before the change takes effect.

14Law

Dutch law, The Hague.

These terms are governed by the law of the Netherlands. Disputes go to the competent court in The Hague, without prejudice to any right you have as a consumer to bring proceedings in the courts of your own country of residence.
