Founding stageThe public-benefit foundation is established; the institution described is designed, not yet built. Founding capital builds it.
01The Rupture

The Meta-Crisis is not a forecast. It is the operating environment.

Within a few years, problems long treated as separate have started to move as one. Climate data arrives faster than the institutions built to answer it. Democracies slide backwards on a shared playbook. Technology outruns the rules meant to govern it. Inequality has reached levels not seen since before the world wars. This is not a polycrisis — a pile-up of separate problems. It is a Meta-Crisis: one system breaking in many places at once. Fix the breaks one at a time, and the system still fails.

You do not need the word Meta-Crisis to see the gap. Call the moment what you will: no institution we have was built for the job of coordination itself.

And yet, by almost every measure, this is the most capable moment in human history. More than half the world is middle-class or better. Nine people in ten can read. Life expectancy has more than doubled since 1900. We are not short of resources, knowledge or talent. We are short of the machinery to put them to work — a generation with the means to act, and a narrowing window in which to choose to.

02The Requirements

Scale. Depth. Time. Form. A meta-solution requires all four, held together.

Our institutions are doing what they were designed to do. None was designed for this. Governments stop at borders and think in election cycles. Markets cannot price dangers they cannot see in time. Philanthropy — $800 billion a year — is small next to $2.7 trillion of yearly defence spending. And the NGO world is split into silos by the way it is funded. Turn those failures inside out, and four requirements appear.

Scale

Coordinating at the scale of civilisation takes membership at the scale of civilisation. The tipping-point research — Chenoweth's ~3.5%, Centola's ~25% — points to hundreds of millions. A hundred million is the credible threshold; half a billion is within the strong range.

Depth

Scale alone has defeated every large membership organisation of the last century. Members must do more than subscribe. They must take part — organising locally, delivering Projects, and in time running their economic lives through services built to serve the mission, not to extract from members.

Time

The Meta-Crisis is urgent but not short: action within years, sustained over decades. That rules out the movement's way — a burst of visibility, then exhaustion — and the old institution's way — continuity standing in for urgency. What is needed can ignite in five years and still be gathering strength in forty.

Form

The machinery must serve the mission, not the other way round. A foundation protects the mission. A company, locked to that mission by its charter and designed for B Corp certification, earns the money. A legally binding covenant sends the profit back to the mission — not into private pockets.

03The Constituency

The largest aligned population on earth has no institution.

Beneath the polarised surface sits what researchers call the exhausted majority — in developed democracies, between half and seven in ten adults, tired of the permanent contest and wanting institutions that work. Their withdrawal is not apathy. It is the sensible response of people whose real convictions have no vehicle. Within them sits the Silent Giant — the capable, values-driven centre. Around 2.2 billion adults worldwide hold between $10,000 and $1,000,000 in wealth. The reachable, values-aligned core of that group — people with money, skills, networks and standing — numbers in the hundreds of millions: roughly six times the hundred million UP seeks to organise by 2035.

Starting with this group is not elitism. It is how UP funds access for everyone — the oldest pattern in mutual institutions. Those with capacity float every boat. And this is not a position on the left–right line but a force above it: not converting partisans, but gathering the people the contest has worn out.

The constituency, in its own words

Between 2016 and 2020, UP's founder ran a first expedition into exactly this constituency — Leaders Expedition, LEx: roughly a thousand contributors across 35+ countries. Asked on camera why it mattered, they answered:

“I've met so many people who want to change the world — and I see them struggling to find resources, support, and other people who can join forces. Working in isolation, it is very difficult to succeed.”

Marcela · Canada

“It's not enough for responsible leaders to do our own work — we have to find an effective means to scale our ideas, our influence, our resources. We're running out of time.”

Perry · Costa Rica

“The leadership we have is dominated by those seeking influence, wealth and fame. What's needed is the alternative: working with community leaders so they can achieve their own objectives.”

Peter · Kenya

“A platform that brings together like-minded individuals to share ideas towards a better humanity — in a world with so much polarization, it is needed more than ever.”

Nonye · nurse practitioner, United States

“The best new ideas — the most innovative solutions — arise when we bring together people with diverse perspectives but shared values.”

Judy · Canada

“There is no word to translate ‘leadership’ into French — so you understand how far we are from this concept here.”

Cedric · France

“Our personal growth is not worth it if we don't grow our society as well. The end goal seems enormous — but the world has never benefited from people who think small.”

Roberto · Canada

“Generations of leaders were raised to believe ‘more for me’ is better. We need leaders everywhere who think and act on ‘more for we’.”

Mike · United States

LEx demonstrated the demand; what it could not do taught the design. The decisive lesson: goodwill at this density stalls without an operating system beneath it. Three years of design have been built as much on what did not work as on what did.

04The Evidence

The behaviours UP asks for are among the best-documented in the social record.

Three things must be true, and the evidence supports each one: this group exists at scale, it will pay for what it believes in, and — most strongly — it will act as citizens, not just consumers. The steady, meet-every-week membership institution is one of the most proven forms in modern life. What none of them has done is join that membership to an economic engine, a coordination layer, and a structure spanning every field at once.

The gap is supply, not demand.

05The Demand

The evidence they will come — and pay.

Independent lines of research point the same way: values-driven people with means already pay for what they believe in. What they lack is one institution to do it through.

06The Choice

Built not on despair, but on optimism.

In the past, great leaps forward were forced by crisis or war. This moment offers something different: a leap made by choice — humanity's full capacity, organised before catastrophe rather than after it, moving toward a future we choose rather than away from one we fear. Instead of being frozen by "what if we fail," the centre can be moved by "what if we succeed."

UP's stance is sincere optimism — not the doom that says nothing can be done, and not the hollow cheer that pretends nothing is wrong. Name the challenges plainly. Call them serious. Then call them solvable, because the capacity to meet them exists. It is the grounded confidence of people who build quietly and well — a belief in our shared future, and faith in ourselves to achieve it.

Two things are true. The Meta-Crisis is real. So is the breakthrough. Choose to build.
